Scotland will permanently ban fracking, the country’s energy minister has announced, despite the controversial practice going ahead south of the Border.
Paul Wheelhouse, Scotland’s energy minister, announced the ban to the Scottish Parliament on Tuesday, extending a moratorium that has been in place since 2015.
The permanent ban will affect companies including Ineos, the petrochemicals company controlled by British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe, which has invested in licences to frack north of the Border.
Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, involves pumping water, sand and chemicals under the ground at high pressure to release gas from “tight” rock formations.
Elisabeth Whitebread, energy campaigner at Greenpeace UK, said:
The Scottish Government ban on fracking is a huge win for thousands of people who have campaigned against fracking for six years. Unlike Westminster, Holyrood is listening to public opinion. We already have more gas than we can afford to burn, and as well as damaging the climate, fracking will cause local noise, air and light pollution.
