Production has started at the Chevron-led Wheatstone liquefied natural gas project in Australia after six years of construction and investment of $34bn.
The development, located off the coastline of Western Australia, will start shipping its first gas in the coming weeks, Chevron said in a statement on Monday.
Chevron operates the joint-venture for partners Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company, Woodside Petroleum, Kyushu Electric Power Company and JERA.
When fully complete, Wheatstone, which is one of Australia’s largest-ever resource developments, will deliver 8.9 million tonnes of gas for export markets each year.
The project is among a number of new developments which combined are expected to lift global LNG supplies by 50 per cent between 2014 and 2021, according to BP estimates.
